Dog Parks and Pet-Friendly Spaces in Rockwall County

Rockwall County's combination of lake access, mature park infrastructure, and trail systems makes it one of the better environments for active dog owners in the DFW metro area.

The county provides genuine outdoor recreation options for dogs and their owners — including lake access, nature preserves, and maintained off-leash dog park facilities.

Off-Leash Dog Parks

Harry Myers Regional Park Dog Park (Rockwall)

Harry Myers Regional Park is home to Rockwall's primary dedicated off-leash dog park facility. The park features separate enclosures for large dogs (over 25 pounds) and small dogs (under 25 pounds), providing safer interactions for size-disparate dogs and owners who prefer a less overwhelming environment for smaller pets.

Facilities include fencing, water access (seasonal), waste bag dispensers and disposal stations, and benches for owners. Free to use and open during park hours. Dogs must be current on vaccinations and licensed.

Rowlett Dog Park (Rowlett)

The City of Rowlett maintains a dog park facility within its park system serving the county's western urban population. Separate areas for large and small dogs, water access, and a community of regular users make it a consistent option for Rowlett-area dog owners.

Pet-Friendly Trails and Green Spaces

Lake Ray Hubbard Waterfront Trail (Rockwall): The waterfront trail along the Rockwall harbor area is the county's most scenic walk with a dog — lake views, maintained pavement, and a linear park setting.

Dogs are welcome on leash throughout. The proximity to The Harbor's outdoor dining and retail creates a lively atmosphere on warm evenings.

Rowlett Creek Preserve (Rowlett): A nature preserve with approximately 7 miles of natural surface trails through creek bottom habitat. Dogs on leash are welcome on all trails.

The natural surface and creek crossings make it a distinctly different experience from paved trail systems — mud and water are to be expected.

Harry Myers Regional Park General Trails: Beyond the dedicated dog park, the general trail system at Harry Myers allows leashed dogs throughout.

The park's combination of open grass areas, tree cover, and lake adjacency makes it a well-rounded outdoor destination for dogs of all sizes.

Lake Access for Dogs

Lake Ray Hubbard provides informal dog-friendly access at several points along the Rockwall County shoreline. Many dogs and their owners use gravel and grass shoreline areas near Harry Myers Park for swimming and water retrieval. Two important cautions apply year-round:

Blue-green algae can be fatal to dogs within hours of ingestion or heavy skin contact — check TCEQ and TPWD advisories before any lake water exposure for dogs during June through September.

Boat traffic creates water safety hazards for swimming dogs near boat lanes — swim dogs in protected coves away from primary boat traffic corridors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are pets allowed at The Harbor at Rockwall?

The Harbor's outdoor areas — promenade, outdoor dining patios, and waterfront access areas — are generally pet-friendly for leashed dogs. Individual restaurant and retail patios set their own pet policies.

Dogs are welcome on the waterfront promenade and in outdoor common areas. Check with specific restaurants about their outdoor patio dog policy before dining.
