Your complete travel and tourism guide to Grayson County, TX — Lake Texoma, the Eisenhower Birthplace, Hagerman Wildlife Refuge, historic Denison, Tanglewood Resort, and where to stay.

Grayson County is a genuine travel destination hiding in plain sight. Most Texans know Lake Texoma — one of the largest reservoirs in the United States — but fewer know that the Texas side of the lake sits in Grayson County, with a full ecosystem of outdoor recreation, state parks, wildlife refuges, historic communities, and lakeside dining that makes for a compelling weekend or extended stay.

The Big Draw: Lake Texoma

Lake Texoma straddles the Texas-Oklahoma border and covers approximately 89,000 surface acres — one of the largest reservoirs in the country.

The lake's striped bass fishery is its signature attraction and one of the finest inland striper fisheries in North America, with a self-sustaining population that produces fish year-round.

Multiple marinas on the Texas side provide boat launches, fuel, and rentals for powerboating, sailing, waterskiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Fishing

Multiple licensed fishing guides operate on Lake Texoma year-round. A guided half-day or full-day striper trip is the highest-value fishing experience on the lake.

Other species include largemouth and smallmouth bass, white bass, crappie, catfish, and sand bass. A Texas freshwater fishing license is required; the special Lake Texoma license covers fishing in both the Texas and Oklahoma portions of the lake.

Eisenhower State Park

A 423-acre Texas State Park on the Lake Texoma shoreline near Denison offering the best single-stop outdoor destination in Grayson County — lake access, swimming beach, hiking trails, camping, and wildlife. Day-use fee required (Texas State Park pass waives entry). Camping reservations at texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge covers over 11,000 acres on the Big Mineral Arm of Lake Texoma and is one of the premier birding destinations in North Texas.

The refuge hosts significant waterfowl concentrations from October through March — snow geese, Canada geese, pintails, mallards, and dozens of other species. A paved auto tour route is accessible for all mobility levels. Free and open year-round.

Historic Denison

Denison was founded in 1872 as a railroad town — the terminus of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) Railroad — and its historic downtown preserves remarkable Victorian-era commercial architecture.

The downtown district is one of the most intact historic commercial districts in North Texas and a genuine destination for history enthusiasts.

Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site

Dwight D. Eisenhower — Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in World War II and 34th President of the United States — was born in Denison, Texas on October 14, 1890. The Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site preserves the modest two-story house where Ike was born, along with interpretive exhibits about his early life and extraordinary career.

Located at 208 E. Day St., Denison. Open Wednesday through Sunday — check tpwd.texas.gov for current hours and admission.

Denison Historic Downtown

Denison's Main Street corridor hosts locally owned restaurants, antique shops, boutiques, and arts venues in beautifully preserved historic buildings.

The restored Katy Depot serves as a community landmark and event venue — a physical reminder of the railroad history that created Denison.

Tanglewood Resort

Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro is the most developed hospitality destination on the Texas side of Lake Texoma — hotel rooms, condos, marina access, a golf course, pool facilities, and a full-service restaurant.

A self-contained lake destination for family vacations, corporate retreats, and romantic getaways. Book at tanglewoodresort.com well in advance for summer weekends.
